What is a Diplomate?
A Diplomate is a professional designation and diploma of advanced competence that far
succeeds the minimum requirements for licensure in
any state or province. Diplomate status is awarded by the American Board of Professional
Psychology (ABPP), which is the oldest and most respected governing specialty board granting certification
in North America.
Since 1947 the ABPP has awarded Diplomate status to practitioners to designate to the public that they possess advanced
competency in their areas of specialization. The credentialing process is very rigorous and
involves having a practioner's work directly examined by a committee of specialists including having an oral
defense of their work and clinical judgment. It is not an easy credential to obtain and very few psychologists
are awarded this honor. Dr. Mills has two Diplomate designations
and is the only Diplomate in psychology practicing in the Region of Durham.
